Regular teeth cleanings are critical to maintaining teeth and gums. Clean teeth and healthy gums are also essential to maintaining general health. Recent studies also show that healthy teeth and gums have a positive effect on mental health, as well.
There is more to a professional teeth “cleaning” in our office than meets the eye. In addition to removing plaque and tartar (which is mineralized plaque) and polishing the surface of the teeth, our dental hygienists remove plaque and bacteria at and below the gum line which can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. The academy of general dentistry recommends that, in addition to daily brushing and flossing, your teeth should be professionally cleaned by a professional dental hygienist at least twice a year. You may need cleaning more frequently if you have periodontitis or other medical issues, such as diabetes. Our hygienists may also, depending on your age, clean and adjust dentures, apply sealants (to children) and apply fluoride when required. They also offer nutritional counseling as related to dental health, daily brushing and flossing education, recommendations for followup cleaning and a number of other services.
Our dental hygienists do much more than clean your teeth above and below the gum line. They also review and update your medical history, screen your mouth for cancers and perform X-rays.
